About this show

I spend a lot of time teaching people how to create animations with very specific tools. I spend a lot of time on features, syntax, and workflow tips. I can show you the exact 3-5 steps you need to follow to accomplish a particular task.

I can’t make you a really good animator

That is up to you. It takes literally years for some of us to refine our timing and get a sense for what “feels right”.

I reached a point recently where I realized that spoon-feeding everyone solutions isn’t really helping.

You aren’t going to learn unless you take what you know and apply it on your own with no guidance.

When you get a job, you are going to be given some static storyboards and it will be up to you to bring them to life.

I’m creating this show so that I can give you just a little bit of creative spark to try something new and foster a deeper appreciation for the animations you see every day.

What tools should I use?

It doesn’t matter. Although my training and expertise revolves heavily around scripted animation with the GreenSock Animation Platform and Adobe Animate, this show is for anyone. The focus is on the “end result” not what I used to create it.

What will we be studying?

I live in a bit of a bubble of what some call “web animation” but I want to go beyond that. Some of the best animations are lurking in video game interfaces, movie credits, and TV commercials. I’ve even started recording animated signage in grocery stores and gas stations for inspiration.

As someone who spends most of my time online I see a lot of online ads. I hate them as much as you do, but I also appreciate the ones that are well made.

I spent a majority of my career doing things related to the production of online ads with very talented creative directors. It was through making these ads that I really learned how important timing is and how to push the capabilities of the tools I had access to.

Building online ads can give you some of the best experience in building “story telling” animations and I highly recommend banner production as a place to hone your craft.

There’s no better advice I can give someone than “find something you think is cool and try to recreate it”.

That’s really all this show is about.
